Gidgee trees (Acacia cambagei) growing along sand or stony creek banks after leaving  Oodnadatta.
We left the Oodnadatta track at the town, where it veers west to Marla, ending at the Stuart Highway.  Instead we took the track north to Witjira National Park – It seemed more interesting being  a desert NP on the edge of the Simpson Desert!
This route is some distance from Old Ghan railway although it too heads north, crossing the border of Northern Territory to Finke. We only cross over the Old Ghan railway at the old Pedirka Station (ruins) to enter Witjira National Park.
This National Park protects large areas of desert flora and unstable ground where thermal mound springs are still being formed.
