International Mayday! - 01-05-2015

Wicken Fen – Cambridgeshire 23-04-2015
Wicken Fen is a wetland nature reserve situated near the village of Wicken, Cambridgeshire.
It is one of Britain's oldest nature reserves, and was the first reserve cared for by the National Trust, starting in 1899.
Start of the Wicken Lode.
Nature Trail follows Wicken Lode.
Under the bridge – to the left for Burwell Lode, on the right to the River Cam via lock gate.
Ahead is the lock gate to the River Cam.

What a blissful day on Wicken Lode – next time I will continue along the Burwell to Reach Lodes.

Burwell – Cambridgeshire 22-04-2015
Tunbridge Farm – the house that Peter restored over a seven year period mid 1952 to 1959; it’s surroundings providing us children with magic, adventure and hard work.
Rear view showing the North Wing built of clunch stone. The rest of the house was constructed with narrow bricks, typical in the Elizabethan period.
The ‘white barn’ where the Ayrshire cow was milked and chickens roosted. Ann sent their eggs to the Egg Marketing Board.
Chickens still scratch around the house!
House in Low Road (Lovers Lane) Edward Fitzball (1792- 1873) lived here. He wrote ‘My Pretty Jane’

Grimes Graves – Norfolk UK 19-04-2015
Grimes Graves is a large Neolithic flint mining complex in Norfolk.
It was worked between circa 3000 BC and circa 1900 BC, although production may have continued well into the Bronze and Iron Ages owing to the low cost of flint compared with metals. Flint was much in demand for making polished stone axes in the Neolithic period.
Much later, when flint had been replaced by metal tools, flint nodules were in demand for other uses, such as for building and as strikers for muskets.
