A ‘gold spike’ marks the start of the Ediacarian Period following glaciation.  Multi-celled organisms became widespread in maritime environments. The pink Elatina Formation glacial tillite is overlain by buff Nuccaleena formation seen below.
Unfortunately although we searched for fossils at the gold spike mark, we found nothing!

Nuccaleena Formation – About 610 million years ago, abrupt warming brought the end of an ice age. This caused the sea level to rise flooding the whole Adelaide Geosyncline.
This buff coloured dolomite was formed in the warm shallow seas and provides an excellent marker bed for geological mapping.

Stomatolite fossils exposed by the dry bed of Enorama Creek. They are evidence of some of the earliest life on earth. Stromatolites were formed by trapping sediments  between mats of  blue green algae which were able to release the oxygen bound up in chemical molecules into the atmosphere. Up until that time the earth contained no oxygen.
