Bunyeroo Wilcolo – Flinders Ranges - South Australia 02-04-2014

The brown silty sandstones in this gully are part of the sediments filling deep submarine channels cut into Rawnsley Quartite. These sediments retained the impressions of the oldest mobile animals on Earth – examples of the Ediocaran Biota – about 555 million years old.

The strange ‘lumpy’ structures in the grey Wilkawillina Limestone are of uncertain origin. Investigations are under way  to determine the environment in which they were formed some 530 million years ago.
