In an unprecedented show of solidarity, around 10,000 people took to the streets of Lismore today – to declare the region gasfield free.

It’s the biggest social movement of its kind in the region, which is calling on the government to ban unconventional gas mining.

The huge crowd saturated Lismore’s CBD today, in a unified stance against mining and exploration on the north coast.

Mayors of both Lismore and Clarence Valley accepted letters from community members, declaring themselves CSG free.

Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell says the State Government and mining companies must listen.

"Look, the message is this community does not want coal-seam gas," she said.

"The people in the city need to listen to this, because our region is where they get their food.
