Ibiza – Es Broll region 29-01-12

It was overcast and some rain but this did not spoil our long walk in the hills to see the spring that feeds the watercourses in this region. This area of Es Broll is extremely fertile and the farmers are part of a ‘cooperative’ whereby concrete channels constructed by the community many years ago direct the spring’s flow to each farmer’s small holding in turn. A series of sluice gates controls the flow.

Some farmers have prepared potato furrows, others have onions already springing up together with garlic and cabbages.

Wild asparagus can be harvested here although a sharp eye is required to spot the tender shoots hiding amongst the prickly asparagus bush! Wild leeks can be found and also wild rosemary with fennel grows in abundance!
