Pencil Pines are unique to Tasmania; quite small (15m high) and related to the world’s to the world’s tallest tree the giant Californian Sequoia. Pencil Pines are incredibly slow growing so the one in the background could be over 1000 years old.
Despite their ancient origins within the southern continent of Gondwana and having survived several ice ages, they are vulnerable to pollution and bush fires.
