Nullarbor flora for many km within its centre. The Aboriginal name is Oondin meaning ‘the waterless’ an accurate observation since the average rainfall for the Plain is about 250mm per annum.
The Nullarbor Plain extends approximately 725 km from west to east and from the coast it extends 320 km to the Great Victoria Desert in the north. It covers an area almost as large as Victoria.
The Plain emerged from the sea about 25million years ago. The old seabed formed the limestone that covers the Plain to a depth of 15m to 60m. It is one of the largest arid to semi arid Karst landforms in the world.
