The First Nations of Australia - birth of a political party in The Northern Territory

The First Nations Political Party (FNPP) is being launched by Maurie Japarta Ryan, grandson of stockman Vincent Lingiari, who led the 1966-75 walk-off from Wave Hill station, then owned by British Lord Vestey.

Maurie Japarta Ryan, a Gurindji elder, has worked towards forming an Indigenous political party since he taught at a school in the remote Top End community of Kalkaringi in the Northern Territory, some 30 years ago.

Geraldine Doyle USA

UNITED STATES: Geraldine Doyle, the inspiration for the iconic "We Can Do It" World War II poster that was later adopted by the feminist movement, has died aged 86.

Mrs Doyle was a 17-year-old working in a steel factory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, when she featured on the Rosie the Riveter poster wearing a red and white polka-dot bandana and flexing her biceps.

The image represented the millions of women who worked in US factories during the war. Mrs Doyle's photograph was taken by a United Press International photographer and it became the basis for the poster, which was originally produced in 1942.

This particular lookout is awe-inspiring in that no matter what the weather or time of day, it still draws poetry to mind.

In November 2000, the Greater Blue Mountains (including the Blue Mountains National Park) was listed as a World Heritage Area. It covers over one million hectares.

Snow gum - Eucalyptus pauciflora! Strange because from October to January a profuse amount of lovely white flowers appear! It has beautiful twisted branches and only grows to about 30 metres tall. So it’s a small to medium spreading tree. It usually has a somewhat crooked trunk and many branches with distinctive beautiful smooth green, grey and cream bark.
