Maori carvings in Stewart Park - Middlesbrough
Little remains of the medieval village, East Marton, which lies beneath Stewart Park grasslands. In 1728 James Cook, son of a farm labourer, was born in this village, to became England's greatest mariner and navigator.

The attempt to use the private sector to get people off the dole is getting into difficulties. 'Payment by results' has been the mantra. Now, with few jobs around, things are very different - private companies are asking for money upfront (public money) to pay for the deal.

Tahiti Warrior in 1769 - Captain Cook's voyage
During his first visit to the Society Islands (Tahiti) in 1769 Cook and his crew experienced tattooing and became the first recorded European sailors to have tattoos.
